One of the most well known games of all time is Asteroids, the hit arcade action game that was released back in the late 1970s, before home consoles were even a thing that had gotten a proper foothold yet, and the NES was just a distant twinkle in Nintendo’s eye. Now, the newly resurgent Atari, which seems hellbent on utilizing all of its classic IPs effectively by modernizing them for the current generation of gaming, has announced that Asteroids will be making a return… as a multiplayer survival action game for the PC.

All of my wat.

“Asteroids is one of the most iconic titles in Atari’s portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises, and we’re looking forward to ushering the game into today’s digital gaming era,” said Fred Chesnais, Chief Executive Officer, Atari. “We’re paying homage to the original Asteroids by incorporating classic features such as asteroid blasting capabilities, while introducing a completely new premise and gameplay. Asteroids: Outpost will appeal to both fans of the classic Asteroids as well as enthusiasts of immersive survival games and expansive MMOs.”

Describing the game itself, Atari made it actually sound fairly compelling: it thrusts players onto a massive, unforgiving asteroid; players must explore the asteroid, collecting resources, scavenging for ore, crafting equipment, and expanding their territory as they build highly customized bases – all while forming alliances and fighting off other players in challenging multiplayer gameplay. Recurring showers of smaller asteroids represent a source of wealth and a threat as players shoot down these incoming projectiles to defend their claims and harvest their components.

Asteroids: Outpost will be out exclusively on PC. Let’s just hope they don’t make it a generic science fiction space shooter. Stay tuned for more informaton.
