Ubisoft Promises Modern Day Story Will Return in Future Assassin’s Creed Games

'We have to be careful.'

Assassins Creed Rogue 2

One of the central plot threads in Assassin’s Creed mythos, that ties together all the games and weaves it into one science fiction story, is the present day story, which usually involves a present day person entering the Animus and reliving the genetic memories of his or her ancestor (which forms the bulk of the game’s material). However, in Assassin’s Creed Unity, the modern day story was curiously missing and downplayed, and the term ‘Animus’ wasn’t even mentioned.

Ubisoft has assured fans of the series that this was just an aberration, and that the modern day story would be returning in future installments, suggesting that it would be more robust as well.

“We always plan to have more modern day but we have to be really smart about how we do it. There was a plan for a little more modern day in Unity – a plan,” Assassin’s Creed lead writer Darby McDevitt said, “nothing that was actually cut.

“The thing with Unity was that it was a completely fresh game on a completely fresh generation. So creating any kind of modern day is a pretty huge ask. To create a city, for instance, or even part of a city, would require six months of work by many, many artists, designers, modellers. And then you’d need gameplay systems that didn’t feel like you were just fencing.”

He also said that Ubisoft was preparing the backstory of the game’s mythos to use over the next 10, 20 years.

“I particularly love the lore. I’ve been working the past two years, with all the other writers, on getting a great document together on the First Civilisation.

“We’ve created 500, 600, 700 years worth of history that we hope to start teasing out for the next 10, 20 years or however long we’re around,” he continued.

So that’s another sixty Assassin’s Creed games, then?
