Ubisoft Cancels Companion App For The Division

An actual good decision by Ubisoft...?

Tom Clancy's The Division

Assassin’s Creed Unity is not the only major Ubisoft game release that will launch without a companion app, after a long line of abusive companion apps being released for every single game that Ubisoft releases. Ubisoft confirmed today that their long awaited massively multiplayer online survival action game, The Division, will also not be shipping with a companion app, since it has been canceled.

A representative from developer Massive confirmed to IGN that this companion app had been canceled because it “created an imbalance” in competitive multiplayer gameplay. This makes sense, since the app would let players create unnecessarily unfair conditions for opposing teams, giving them abilities such as controlling drones, or offering buffs to all players on your team on the map.

It’s good to see, then, that Ubisoft has actually made a decision because of considerations for game design for a change, rather than because of financial or branding gain. It makes for a nice change.

The Division launches on Xbox One, PS4, and PC next year.
