As we get closer to the release of Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain we’re getting a ton more info. In particular, YouTube user Yongyea released a couple of different videos in which he shed a ton of light on the upcoming game. One video is a massive hour and a half video and the other is a 20 minute impression the user got from hands-on play at E3. Even with the shorter video, there was an awful lot of information but there were a couple of important bullet points.

Among the interesting factoid was that the opening credits were shown during the intro cutscene, and the cassette tapes that are found in the game will paint a full picture between Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain. When it comes to the enemies in the game, there has been quite a bit of talk about the Skulls. This video apparently sheds more light on them mentioning that when a Skull spots you a ‘reflex mode’-like scene consisting of flashing images will play, after which they’ll go into a different state to attack you. There also might be some sort of special power employed by these enemies as the user mentions one of the Skulls seemed to pull a machine gun from thin air (out of the empty palm of his other hand).

When it comes to controls and movement, Yongyea says that Snake doesn’t appear to be glued to walls anymore. He also says cardboard boxes have been changed in the way they can be used as cover. Guards seem a bit smarter too, shooting their guns in the air if they see you to let other guards know you’re there. This makes it easier to get into and out of cover. Users will get to use a bionic arm punch when they’re running using the R2 button. The caveat is that it needs to be equipped as a secondary weapon. The controls in general are supposed to be better than the previous version.

Finally, when it comes to well known characters from the series, there are a couple of tidbits. The first is that Phantom Pain has a bit of real world product placement, since Ocelot is wearing the ‘Ocelot Gear’ sunglasses made by JF REY. Finally, Yongyea says that after lots of rumors and rumblings, he’s confident Big Boss is definitely Big Boss. Users will get to see all this info in action when Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain launches on September 1.
