3DS Continues To Rule Japan, PS4 and Wii U Re-Ignite Japanese Console Market

The Japanese market saw the healthiest numbers it has in a while.

New Nintendo 3DS

The newest batch of Media Create numbers for game hardware and software sales in Japan is out, and it looks like the 3DS is still ruling the country with an iron fist, with over 100,000 units sold over the last week, largely on the back of Monster Hunter X.

The PS4 and Wii U bring in second and third place on the hardware charts, with over 30,000 units sold each, reinvigorating the Japanese console market in the process. The PS Vita seems to be stuck in a rut, and the Xbox One is, as always, a no show.

The full hardware and software numbers follow:

  1. Monster Hunter X – 3DS – 332,478
  2. Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam – 3DS – 49,266
  3. Yo-kai Watch Busters – 3DS – 38,434
  4. Splatoon – Wii U – 35,256
  5. Super Mario Maker – Wii U – 32,155
  6. Bloodborne: The Old Hunters Edition – PS4 – 20,455
  7. Disney Magical World 2 – 3DS – 13,906
  8. Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer – 3DS – 11,734
  9. Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition – PS Vita – 11,179
  10. Call of Dut: Black Ops III – PS4 – 11,092
  11. Star Wars Battlefront – PS4 – 9,487
  12. Sumikko Gurashi Omise Hajimerun Desu – 3DS – 7,654
  13. Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version – Wii U – 7,060
  14. Aikatsu! My No.1 Stage! – 3DS – 6,298
  15. Himouto! Umaru-chan Himouto Ikusei Keikaku – PS Vita – 6,063
  16. Rhythm Heaven: The Best Plus – 3DS – 5,743
  17. Zelda: Tri Force Heroes – 3DS – 5,305
  18. Pokemon Rumble World – 3DS – 5,229
  19. Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon – 3DS – 5,107
  20. Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition – PS4 – 4,630

And here’s the hardware chart:

  1. Nintendo 3DS – 103,009
  2. PS4 – 35,782
  3. Wii U – 32,604
  4. PS Vita – 22,506
  5. Xbox One – 289

The Wii U seems to be selling on the continued might of Splatoon, which doesn’t fail to surprise, and Super Mario Maker; the PS4, meanwhile, lacks any big seller, but its price cut seems to have made a positive impact on its sales baseline.

It can only be a good thing- the console market’s revival in Japan is something I have been anxiously waiting for for a long time now.
