It’s not a secret that Nintendo hasn’t just been losing the console wars over the last few years, but they’ve been getting decimated by their competition. In a recent Q&A phone call, the company’s newest president, Tatsumi Kimishima talked about the firm’s expectations when it comes to the Nintendo NX. Among those expectations is real optimism that the launch of this console could be a shot in the arm for the company in terms of profits and actually becoming a player in these console wars.
“To achieve Nintendo-like profits, one important factor will be establishing a solid launch for our NX and smart device businesses. I believe the key to doing this is to allocate our resources appropriately to proceed with hardware and software development on schedule and deliver our products to our consumers in a timely manner.” He said in the conference call. So what does “Nintendo-like” profits mean? As Gamasutra pointed out, there was a time, such as when the Wii and DS were super popular when the firm was turning huge profits. It wasn’t until 2011 that the downturn started and Nintendo began seeing net losses.
It’s interesting to not that Kimishima mentioned the smart devices and earlier in the call stated the mobile games and apps that are coming. While some have wondered just how devoted to mobile the company is going to be, it appears the new president is plenty invested in that area. As for just how solid a launch the NX can have? We’ll have to wait and see. We should be getting more details about the upcoming console in the not too distant future.
