Far Cry Primal

Ubisoft is trying something new with the upcoming Far Cry Primal– the company has espoused the virtue of open world games for a very long time, but their games’ stories usually do not reflect the benefits of open world in their structure. Far Cry Primal, however, will be attempting a new, non linear and yet structured, approach to storytelling.

“The village is really the backbone of your progression and your story,” said Ubisoft Associate Producer Paola Joyaux. “By going into the wild and exploring the world, you’ll find specialists. Each of them will be your mentor in a specialty that you’ll need to master to push back the danger of the world. So when you bring them back to the village, they’ll build huts there. And by working with them – sometimes they’ll need new components you can only find farther away, or you’ll help them develop new technology – you’ll not only improve your village, but also gain new knowledge that will help you improve yourself.”

Based on which specialists you rescue, and how you choose to develop yourself and your village, your story arc through Far Cry Primal could take some very different routes- meaning that the storytelling itself will be emergent in the game, and be reflective of the way a player chooses to approach things.

Far Cry Primal launches later this month on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
