Nintendo Rebrands, Returning To Its Classic Red Logo

Now you're playing with power!

Old Nintendo fans will remember the classic Nintendo logo (pictured above)- it used to be red, and was a sign of Nintendo’s brash days, the days when they would challenge people to ‘Get N Or Get Out!’ or ‘Play It Loud!’ The days when they would warn people,’Now You Are Playing With Power…’ Those were the days of old school Nintendo, before the company rebranded itself into a calmer, more modern, family friendly but sterile look with the Wii and DS (and their successors)- with far more sterile marketing, and a bland, grey logo to boot.

However, that is now changing– surreptitiously, Nintendo are going for a rebranding in stores all across North America, and they are also changing their colors on their social media accounts- the focus? The focus now seems to be back on red. Yep, they’re ditching the Wii/DS era look, and returning to the classic red that defined them until the end of the Gamecube days. (on a side note, with this, each of the big three has a color that defines them- blue for PlayStation, green for Xbox, and now red for Nintendo).

That’s not all, either- Nintendo are also moving away from an emphasis on individual systems, like they have done since the Wii and DS days. Instead, the emphasis seems to be on the Nintendo brand, pointing towards a unified Nintendo offering in the future.

Sounds like Nintendo are moving towards having a unified brand identity, much like the one that PlayStation has been able to build up for itself in the last few years- and this brand identity coalesces around the ‘Nintendo’ brand, and the color red- and it also sounds like this is being done just ahead of the NX. What do you think? Does it indicate Nintendo returning to the old school ‘Nintendo Power’ days?
