Firaxis will be launching XCOM 2, the sequel to 2012’s incredible XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which launched on PCs earlier this year, on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year- the game will be launching on the consoles on September 6 in North America, and September 9 for the rest of the world.
The port will be handled by The Workshop, which seems to be a new development house founded by veterans from Call of Duty studio Treyarch. “The incredible reception of XCOM 2 has been rewarding and humbling for the team, and we’ve known console fans have been clamoring to play the game too,” XCOM 2 creative director Jake Solomon says. “As avid console players ourselves, we’re excited to work with The Workshop to bring XCOM 2 to all of our fans.”
XCOM: Enemy Unknown launched on consoles alongside PC in 2012, as did Enemy Within a year later. For XCOM 2, Firaxis had announced that they were focused on the PC version, trying to deliver an uncompromised strategy game experience, unlike Enemy Unknown, where console hardware had factored into design considerations. They definitely achieved this with an incredible experience, although one that was marred by a plethora of technical issues- hopefully something that they will be able to avoid with the console release.
