Sony’s Playstation Vita handheld has consistently offered up the closest thing to a “console experience” you can get on handheld. But it’s been conspicuously missing of late, particularly at E3. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Atsushi Morita talked to 4Gamer about both the PlayStation Vita’s absence at E3 and the rate of sales pickup for the PlayStation 4.
Morita explained tat the PlayStation 4’s launch was aimed squarely at Western Markets, with a launch lineup that catered primarily to European and North American markets. This certainly appealed to Western gamers, but Japan–which is one of the most console-dominated markets–was slow on the uptake. However, after Japanese titles started appearing on the PlayStation 4, (as well as in the pipeline, as with Persona 5), sales picked up and stabilized at a relatively higher level.
As for the PlayStation Vita’s absence at E3? While it is a fantastic piece of hardware, sales wise, the PlayStation Vita doesn’t have much of a market in the West. Morita explained that, considering that E3 caters primarily to Western markets, it wouldn’t make much sense to feature the Vita this year.
