Final Fantasy 15 Sales Collapse In Japan, While 3DS and PS4 Hold Steady

The Last Guardian also debuts reasonably well.

It looks like Japan really doesn’t like Final Fantasy 15 much, because the week two sales for that game are horrid- in its second week, Final Fantasy 15 sales fell by 88%, with less than 80,000 copies of the game sold. While Final Fantasy as a series has always been known for dramatic second week drops and extremely frontloaded sales in Japan, there was hope that, given lower first week sales for Final Fantasy 15, it would be different this time around, and the game would be able to develop legs and sell longer. That has clearly not happened. In fact, Final Fantasy 15 is already on fourth place on the charts in just its second week.

At the very least, the PS4 is continuing to sell well, however, with almost 93,000 PS4 systems reportedly sold. Less than 10% of these are PS4 Pro systems, but at this point in time, I imagine we have all come to terms with the fact that Sony’s newest console is simply a bomb in Japan. PS4 sales were doubtless buoyed up by the launch of Yakuza 6, which saw its own series drop compared to previous installments, but still managed to top the charts with 218,000 units sold, as well as The Last Guardian, which, at 82,000 units sold, managed to debut shockingly well.

The 3DS came in with the most units sold this week, with almost 109,000 units sold- its own sales were propped up probably by Pokemon Sun/Moon and by Super Mario Maker 3DS, both of which have almost stubborn holds. That said, new 3DS game Miitopia, which Nintendo doubtless intended to be a new Animal Crossing or Tamodachi Life kind of viral sensation, flopped, selling only 27,000 units. Nintendo may be hoping for word of mouth to keep that game alive in the long run, and things like this are known to happen on Nintendo systems, but I’m just not sure if the market is there for that game.

All in all, it was an eventful week for Japanese game and console sales- it will be highly interesting to see how things unfold in the coming weeks and months for Japan.
