Release Date: 2017
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a upcoming remaster of several platformers that were released on the Sony PlayStation 3. This game is going to back the original Crash Bandicoot, Cortex Strikes Back, and Warped into one package. Naughty Dog originally developed all of these games for Sony, but the remaster is being handled by Vicarious Visions and Activision. The companies have said this new title will be released at some point in 2017 though they have yet to give a specific release date. At the same time the developers announced this remastered version of the trio of games, the team also divulged that people who wanted to be able to play as the favorite character sooner would be able to do so in Skylanders: Imaginators. They also said the two games are using the same engine.
Development
Rumblings that either a brand new game or a remastering of old Crash Bandicoot games might be coming started back in 2011. At that time, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg claimed he had nothing to report. He did add he loved the character and was certainly open to going back to that project at some point in the future. In 2014, Sony admitted reviving the series is something they have been thinking about doing, but still did not offer any details on if or when there was a real project being carried out in the Crash Bandicoot name.
In December of 2015, rumors began flying when Sony exec Shawn Layden appeared on stage at the PlayStation Experience wearing a Crash Bandicoot t-shirt. Despite rumblings from the audience, Layden never specifically talked about any game centered around the character and never explained why he chose that t-shirt as one to wear at such a high profile event. In February of 2016, NECA Director of Product Development Randy Falk seemed to spill the beans ahead of time about a game coming, saying in one interview he saw that Sony was working on a title and that was good news. Sony later claimed Falk had been mistaken. At E3 2016, it was finally officially announced that there was going to be a remaster of three Crash Bandicoot games and the development team also divulged that the character would be playable in Skylanders: Imaginators. Vicarious Visions is the development company working on both games.
At the PlayStation Experience in December of 2016 the title of the triple remasters was divulged to be N. Sane Trilogy. Vicarious Visions has also said this game is not a remake, or a remaster. While Naughty Dog worked on the original game, the new development team has said it revamped some of the mechanics of the original games while also working on making the graphics better suit the PS4. At the same time, they have said they didn’t change the stories of the game in the new title, so this isn’t a remake. The team announced the title would be coming in 2017, but there is not an official release date yet.
Story
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is the combination of three of the original games in this long-running series. The first of these is the original Crash Bandicoot, where the story focuses on the evil Dr. Neo Cortex. This game truly is the beginning of the series, as it shows Crash being super evolved by Cortex’s Evo Ray. At the same time, the doctor believes that Crash is not the success he turns out to be and has slated the super-intelligent animal for extermination. Crash escapes the lab and gains his freedom, but learns the doctor is next going to experiment on a female bandicoot named Tawna that Crash has become sweet on. The rest of the game sees the title character attempting to free Tawna from the evil scientist’s clutches.
The second game is Cortex Strikes Back. In this game, Dr. Neo Cortex comes to Crash, claiming he needs the Bandicoot’s help in “saving the world.” Players must decide whether or not the doctor can be trusted, or if there might be yet another odd that plot that needs to be defeated by the end of the game.
The third game of the series is known as Warped and this game’s story takes some serious leaps with the introduction of a new mastermind enemy known as Uka Uka. It is this evil entity that is discovered as being behind the plots that Crash had previously foiled when they were hatched by Neo Cortex. Players will need to travel through time in order to stop Uka Uka as he gets set to launch his own devious plans.
Gameplay
While Vicarious Visions has said it has reworked some of the mechanics in this trilogy, the company has not been specific about what we might see. The gameplay in the original three games is always based in the usual platformer though there are tweaks and changes as the series moves forward. In the original Crash Bandicoot, the moveset is rather basic; players can run, jump and spin over and around treacherous obstacles and past enemies. In Cortex Strikes Back, several new moves for Crash are introduced, including a high jump, high spin jump, body slam and slide attack. The third game, Warped expands on the moveset that were used in the first two game. There are some vehicles which can now be driven and piloted by Crash. The titular character will also get a new power everytime he defeats a level boss. It’s unclear whether these mechanics have been changed, or how much they have been changed from the original versions.
Characters
The characters in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy are all expected to be the same ones that appeared in the first three games included in this set. That means the main character will be Crash Bandicoot and his enemy in all three games will be Dr. Neo Cortex.
There are allies of Crash, including Tawna and his sister, who makes an appearance in the third game. There are also other enemies, such as the evil Uka Uka who also debuts in Warped.
Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
