Nintendo Switch Is Priced Too High, But Paid Online Is Okay, According To Survey Of Japanese Gamers

Not that that has stopped the system from selling out in the country...

The Nintendo Switch is basically sold out in Japan, but according to a survey, its sales right now might still not be reaching their full potential. A poll conducted by Japanese firm Hachima (via Nintendo Life) has revealed that a lot of Japanese gamers consider the Switch to be priced too high, and don’t have any plans to purchase it for now.

42% of the people polled believed the Switch’s price was ‘a little high’, with 22% people thinking it was ‘extremely high.’ Another 30% people thought the Switch is priced ‘just right,’ while the remainder thought the system is actually priced too low for what it is. The effects of this perceived to be high price are that 34% of the people flat out don’t intend to buy the system, while another 23% of the people say they don’t intend to buy it for now. 22% of the people said they will get it, but not on launch, while 21% of the people said they will be buying it day one.

On the flip side, it sounds like Japanese gamers have no problems ponying up for Nintendo’s online service, with 62% saying they were fine with the paid online subscription. That’s actually a bit bemusing, since Japan is traditionally a country that doesn’t buy into online gaming much- you’d think they would be the ones most resistant to paying for a feature that by all accounts, they don’t even care for.

However, it’s not like this high price and the ensuing disinterest are having an effect on the Switch- right now, 80% of all Switch stock in the country is already sold out, and we’re over a month away from its launch. Come March 3, and it will be a bloodbath.
