I have always maintained that the Nintendo Switch will become sort of an inverse Xbox, where it gets the majority of its third party support from Japan, with token western third party support as well. Thus far, that prediction seems to be holding up, and the newest Famitsu survey just reinforces that Japanese developers are interested in Nintendo’s new platform.
When asked whether or not developers would be developing games for the Switch, 54% answered with a ‘Yes,’ with another 25% admitting that the possibility is being researched with the intent to develop games for the system. 46% of them conclusively answered with a ‘Yes’ when asked if they would be releasing Switch games, with another 46% saying Switch games were under consideration. Half of them felt that there were consumer expectations regarding the Switch after the Switch event last month, while 92% of them were happy with the Switch’s price (a fourth of them outright said ‘it is cheap’).
The Switch’s versatility was selected as its most appealing feature, with the ability to swap between portable play, console play, and tabletop play on the go. Meanwhile, the much vaunted HD Rumble functionality came in second place. RPGs, action games, simulation games, racing games, and puzzle games were stated to be the most suitable for the Switch as a platform, while over a third of the developers felt that having an all around rich software library would be crucial in ensuring the Switch’s success.
The Nintendo Switch launches worldwide on March 3. It will be interesting to see whether or not it can live up to all the hype it is generating.
