Injustice 2 Developer Discusses Balancing Game Around The Gear System

A lot of ways to keep the game balanced, apparently.

Injustice 2 is committing a cardinal sin as far as fighting games are concerned- it is basically allowing players to spend money to get an advantage is matches. While this is fine (if a little shady still) for single player modes, when the issue of multiplayer comes up, there’s no denying that this can wreak havoc on the game’s balance- basically, it seems as though publishers are all too happy to compromise on the integrity of their games for a quick buck.

Speaking to GameSpot, however, designer John Edwards  discussed balancing the game around these problems.  “Even for the competitive modes where we allow stats to be active, both players have the option to disable that stuff,” he explained. And if only one of the players disables it, then there is a solution anyway- “What we do is, we automatically boost up the lower-level character’s base stats to the same level as the higher-level character.”

But there is a caveat- lower leveled player won’t automatically get gear boosts. “But the gear does not get boosted, so the player who has invested a lot of time in building up the gear for their level 20 character will still have better stats, better abilities than the level one character does. But it won’t be to such an extreme that the lower-level character has no chance. Essentially we have lots of ways in the game to make sure that [gear] does not become an issue.”

Guys, if you are having to go to such lengths to ensure game balance- maybe, just maybe, the entire system is busted and should be done away with? No? Injustice 2 launches on May 16 for PS4 and Xbox One.
