Every now and again, a video game does something with the sole intention of driving its players to rage or frustration fueled insanity. From switching protagonists to making you think the game has simply stopped working to making you wait over a hundred hours for an ultimately disappointing ending, over the years, video games and their developers have rarely passed up opportunities to gleefully come up with ways to mess with us. And while a few of these moments can drive a person to frenzied bouts of angry screaming, some of them just make you laugh out loud in spite of the mental torture you’re being put through.
Here in this feature we’ve compiled fifteen moments when video games trolled the socks off their players and we just couldn’t deal with it.
ETERNAL DARKNESS- IS THAT A GLITCH?
One of the most original games Nintendo ever published was Silicon Knights’ Eternal Darkness. The game was a psychological horror game that leveraged and utilized player expectations uniquely to subvert them in multiple ways- notably, the game would randomly distort the image and sound on screen, it would introduce controller lag infrequently, and only for a bit, and it would even make you believe that your saved data was corrupted- it was brutal, but it was effective, and it all contributed to its appeal and popularity.
