Nintendo Switch Passes 1.2 Million Units Sold In Japan; 3DS Crosses 23 Million

Nintendo continues to reassert its dominance over Japan with the Switch and 3DS.

It’s been a big few weeks for Nintendo in Japan lately. The launch of Splatoon 2 sold an enormous amount of units, propelling the Switch itself to new heights after a shortages induced slump in the preceding weeks. Now, on the continuing success of Splatoon, as well as the release of Dragon Quest 11, the Switch and the 3DS respectively have reached major milestones in Japan.

The Switch has now crossed 1.2 million units sold in the country, in less than five months since the console’s launch back in March. This is in spite of severe and chronic shortages throttling sales. The 3DS, on the other hand, has crossed 23 million units sold, a hugely impressive number, especially given that it is that it is the third highest selling system of all time in the country. The 3DS is now up year over year in Japan, in spite of being in its seventh year on the market.

This success for both systems can only continue going forward- for the Switch, Nintendo has Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade, and Fire Emblem lined up for this year, as well as a belated Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest port. The 3DS, on the other hand, is getting a new Metroid and Pokemon game. It’ll be great to see how they all perform.
