Assassin’s Creed Origins’ Discovery Mode Lets Players Explore Ancient Egyptian Setting Without Story and Combat

It will be coming to the game in 2018.

A lot of people have often argued – maybe facetiously, maybe seriously – that the virtual tourism of historical locations is the best part of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series. And there really is something to be said for the authentic flavor that permeates the recreations of the settings across time and space that constitute the franchise and its games.

It looks like Ubisoft will be catering directly to those people with the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Origins– next year, the game will get a Discovery Mode that will let players explore the game’s gorgeously rendered and recreated Ancient Egyptian setting – from Alexandria to Memphis, the Nile Delta to the Great Sand Sea, the Giza plateau to the Faiyum Oasis – without any combat or story interrupting that. Which actually sounds pretty neat to me, to be honest.

The concept is definitely playing to the series’ strengths, and is unlike anything that most games have attempted- this will make it a true walking sim, in the best possible way, for all intents and purposes. Let’s hope Ubisoft pulls it off well. Assassin’s Creed Origins launches on October 27 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
