Splatoon 2 Gets Major New Update, Introduces New Maps, New Modes, 140 New Pieces of Gear, and More

Games as a service done right.

Nintendo has just announced a major update for Splatoon 2, and it’s going to be a big one- the new update will introduce four brand new maps to the game, an additional map to the popular Salmon Run mode, 140 new pieces of gear (no, that’s not a typo), a raised level cap to 99 (originally it was 50), new music and hairstyles, new Amiibo features, and, in what is the biggest new addition for me, the ability to change your gear and loadout without having to quit the lobby, a feature that was bafflingly missing from this franchise for two and a half years.

Anyway, this is a major, massive new update- and all of this will be added to the game for absolutely free. It’s not DLC. There are no microtransactions or loot boxes built into the game to subsidize this update. It’s legitimately free content. This is, in other words, games as a service done right (take note, EA).

You can check out a trailer for the new update for yourself below. Splatoon 2 is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
