The big success story of the year is the Nintendo Switch- yes, the PS4 has had a killer year with loads of great exclusives, and fantastic sales, and yes, the Xbox One managed to come back to a position of strength with the launch of the Xbox One X. But nothing beats Nintendo, going from the vapid Wii U to the market leading Nintendo Switch, which has received multiple critically acclaimed games, and been the highest selling platform in most markets around the world since launch, beating even the PS4, if only because of what a study in contrasts it is.
This is something that most analysts seem to agree with, too, noting that while Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have all three done well this Holiday season and this year, the big success story is Nintendo, whose hardware sales seem to be almost single handedly contributing to industry growth. These analysts also note that the PS4 will outsell the Xbox One, with some analysts noting that while the Xbox One X has sold well so far, its long term commercial viability remains in question.
The takeaway is, that with such an eventful industry at the moment, the Switch and Nintendo’s stunning comeback remains the true story of the year- and I agree. It will be exciting to see how Nintendo manages to maintain this momentum going into 2018.
