The Surge 2, the sequel to last year’s surprise hit The Surge, will expand upon the original game in many ways. Given just how well received the first game’s science fiction spin on From Software’s Souls formula was, this can only come as good news for the fans.

Among the changes includes a new upgrade system, which will allow, among other things, use of new military hardware, and even the ability to weaponize everyday gadgets. Speaking to OPM, creative director Jan Klose talked about the new upgrade mechanics in a bit more depth.

“It’s not just an interesting visual look. We want it to expand the mechanics provided. So it shouldn’t be just defence going up when you upgrade a part, but effects unlock. It could be these boosts add something to your back-stab kick [for example].”

From the sounds of things, Klose’s team is trying to allow for more non-linear progression paths via upgrades in the new game—which is definitely something that most RPG fans will appreciate. The Surge 2 is due out on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. You can check out the full story for the game and get more information in Official PlayStation Magazine’s April issue. You can subscribe to the latest Official PlayStation Magazine over here.
