The Nintendo Switch continues to dominate the charts in Japan, and as a result, it has hit a major milestone in just a little over a year since its launch. Tracker Famitsu has confirmed that the hybrid home console has sold 4,037,144 units in Japan, meaning that it has now crossed the vaunted 4 million mark in the country. For comparison, it took the PS4 years before it got there.
Along the way, the Switch has managed to clear another hurdle—it has now outsold the total lifetime sales of Nintendo’s ill fated (but ultimately fantastic and appropriately beloved) GameCube in Japan. In Japan, the GameCube managed to end on a whimper, with only 4 million units sold over its life—the Switch has done more than that in a year.
The next major target is 5 million, which is how much the Nintendo 64 sold there, and shortly afterwards, the PS4, which has taken years to get to sales numbers the Switch is managing in months. The coming months should be interesting to see.
