FIFA 19 on Switch Will Have Improved Graphics

But it still won't be using Frostbite.

EA Sports will, somewhat surprisingly enough, continue supporting the Switch, with FIFA 19 due out on the console this year. The Switch version of the game, like last year’s version, will still not be using Frostbite engine, unlike the PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions of the game- but it will be an improved version of last year’s game, with considerably improved graphics.

“The intent was never to have a one-off custom engine [used in the Switch version of FIFA 18] that were never going to touch again,” Andrei Lazarescu, Supervising Producer for FIFA World Cup mode, told Dream Team FC. “It was to have that as a baseline and then build from there.” He went on to add that some of the improvements that the team plans on making are in fact already trickling in via the new free World Cup update.

That said, Frostbite may be used for a future Switch version of the game- once it has been ported to the Switch properly, at any rate. “I’m not closing the door on that possibility,” he said. “However we didn’t want to create a dumbed-down version of the frostbite engine.”

So the good news is that more FIFA on Switch is coming. Given that FIFA 18 on Switch sold well, and provided a surprisingly authentic recreation of the main event on the go, that does make sense. However, like last year, Switch will probably be missing out on The Journey story mode this year, too- at least there will be Ultimate Team, however.
