Nintendo Switch Breaks PS4’s NPD Streak, Tops Charts in July

Switch takes the hardware charts in terms of revenue AND units sold.

The PS4 has topped the NPD chats every month since February this year (well, technically it was the NES Classic Mini that topped charts last month, but the PS4 was the highest selling current generation console). That changed last month, as Nintendo reclaimed the hardware charts with a vengeance in July, according to the NPD Group’s report.

The Switch was the highest selling console of the month, in terms of revenue and hardware units sold, the NPD Group reports. Outside of Nintendo, Xbox managed to do remarkably well, with its yearly performance currently up by a staggering 60% year over year- this demonstrates that, at least in the United States, the Xbox brand remains strong, and the Xbox One X has driven growth.

Meanwhile, the PS4, of course, remains the top selling console of the year so far, even though it’s been ousted by Nintendo these last couple of months. Collectively, year to date spending on hardware is at its highest level since 2011, the NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella told VentureBeat– which is what happens when you have three systems doing very well on the market.

Who will take August remains to be seen, but no matter which console ends up winning, it is now clear that all three of them are doing abundantly well for themselves.
