In the wake especially of the PlayStation Classic looking like a disappointment, many may have been hoping for Nintendo, who started the current trend of classic micro consoles, to put out their own SKU this year, much like they have been doing for the past few years. We got the NES Classic Mini in 2016, and the SNES Classic Mini in 2017. Surely we would get an N64 Classic Mini this year? Especially given how widely it is beloved, and how it is host to some of the greatest games ever made? Surely the N64 Classic Mini wouldn’t disappoint, right?
Well, it will. By virtue of simply not existing. Speaking to Kotaku, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said that while he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of the N64 Classic Mini happening at some point in the future, it will not happen any time soon.
“I would not ever rule something out,” Reggie said, “but what I can tell you is, certainly [the Nintendo 64 Classic Mini is] not in our planning horizon.”
It’s truly a shame, because as mentioned, it’s something a lot of people have been waiting for, and there have been indications that it is coming as well. Apparently those were wrong, and we’ll have to wait for next year.
At least there’s always the PlayStation Classic.
