Nintendo of America Makes 60% of its Annual Revenue in the Holiday Season, Says Nintendo Exec

Nintendo reveals why it bets everything on the Holiday season so often.

That the Holiday season is important to Nintendo isn’t a controversial statement to make. In fact, this year alone, Nintendo has left the bulk of the sales necessary for it to meet its ambitious target of 20 million units of the Switch shipped for the financial year to the last six months of the financial year, which include the three Holiday season shopping months as well.

However, in a recent interview with Yahoo Finance, Nintendo of America’s President Reggie Fils-Aime revealed just how important the Holiday season can be to Nintendo. He specified that Nintendo generates more revenue in the Americas than anywhere else, and that more than half of that revenue is generated in the Holiday season alone.

“The holiday selling season — October, November and December — critically important to our company,” he said. “We typically do, in the Americas, about 60% of our revenue during that time frame. The reason that it’s so significant is first, our products make great gifts. Whether you’re talking about Nintendo Switch, whether you’re talking about Nintendo 2DS, we really do well with that gift-giving occasion.”

Which, I suppose, also demonstrates why Nintendo leaves the launch of several big titles, such as Pokemon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, as well as the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, to this critical three month window. How the Switch does this year in this period will be interesting to watch, for sure.
