New Super Mario Bros. U DX Sold Through 60% of Its Shipment At Launch In Japan

It’s a good start, but now to see if the game has legs in the long run.

In Japan, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe topped the weekly software charts in its launch week (much like in the UK), finally toppling Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which had held on to the top spot since its launch a month and a half ago, off its perch. However, the interesting thing is that the game could have sold far more than it did—according to what tracking firm Dengeki is reporting, the game ended up selling through 60% of its launch shipment, meaning there are more copies out there that are yet unsold.

To be fair, even with the game not selling through its entire shipment, it sold more than the Wii U version did in 2012 (that version sold through 50% of its shipment at launch), and had sales in the same range. If the legs on the game are as great as the legs on most Nintendo Switch software usually are, then we should see it slowly march to at least the half million unit sold mark in Japan alone, if nothing else.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is out now, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
