Square Enix is the one publisher that most consistently makes a mockery of the concept of release windows for its announced games, or, well… the concept of release for its announced games. Kingdom Hearts 3 came almost six years after its initial announcement, Final Fantasy 15 came a decade after its announcement, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake was announced in 2015, and four years later, is still nowhere close to release.
Which is why any time they make announcements regarding their upcoming games, it’s hard to get immediately excited—when, after all, will we even get to play those games? However, for what it is worth, Square Enix has indicated that it plans on announcing multiple games by E3 this year.
“I cannot go into any detail at the moment, but I believe we will be able to make various announcements in the lead- up to this year’s E3,” Yosuke Matsuda, the President of Square Enix, said during an investor Q&A session.
It is important to note that the context of the question (and the answer) was Square Enix’s projection for its revenues for the coming fiscal year, which seems to indicate that their plan is to release these games with a relatively short marketing cycle—as opposed to how they usually do things. If so, we may see some games announced by E3 this year from Square that we might be playing by this time the following year.
Personally, I’ll believe it when I see it.
