Super Mario Maker 2 is a 2D sidescrolling platformer and creation toolset developed and published by Nintendo.

Development

Super Mario Maker 2 was first revealed for a release on the Nintendo Switch during a Nintendo Direct presentation on February 13, 2019, with a launch scheduled for June of that year.

It was laster announced that the game would be releasing on June 28th. It was also announced the special editions of the game, as well as pre-orders, would ship with a custom stylus, since the Wii U release of the first game relied heavily on the system’s stylus, which the Switch does not have natively.

Gameplay

Like its predecessor, Super Mario Maker 2 allows users to create and share their own Mario levels using an extensive creation toolset that lets players use assets and elements from various eras of Mario platformers. The Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. eras from the previous Super Mario Maker all make a return, while the game also adds assets and backgrounds from Super Mario 3D World. Though 3D World is a 3D platformer, levels created using its assets and backgrounds in Super Mario Maker 2 will be sidescrolling 2D ones.

Super Mario Maker 2 introduces several other new mechanics as well, with the developers having spoken of wanting to take full advantage of the unique capabilities the Switch’s hardware offers. Players can now include steep and gentle sloped terrains to their levels, while other new terrains include clear pipes and rock blocks from Super Mario 3D World, crystal blocks, platform blocks, mushroom trampolines, and crates.

Players can also now customize scrolling levels to a higher degree, which includes choosing the direction of the level’s scrolling, also allowing players to create vertically scrolling levels. Additionally, players can also add a coin total to each level, with the levels displaying how many of the total number of coins the player has collected.

Additionally, the user interface also sees significant changes from Super Mario Maker on the Wii U. Most of this is done through radial wheels instead of drop down menus. Each course element can be viewed on the basis of categories through a magnifying glass, which is selected from the top right of the screen. Each category has its own individual wheel, with elements being divided as per sectors. The screen also shows recently used elements, while elements can also be pinned by players. To give enemies in stages alternate forms, rather than shaking them like it was done in Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker 2 sees players tapping on them to open up a menu. The menu also includes options to add elements to the enemy, such as wings, super mushrooms, and more.

Super Mario Maker 2 features a total of 10 course themes to choose from. Five of these are ones making a return from the previous game- namely, Ground, Underground, Underwater, Ghost House, and Airship. The new themes are Desert, Snow, Forest, Night, and Sky. Each theme uses specific levels from Super Mario 3D World as its backdrop template when created levels in that game’s style. These are Super Bell Hill (Ground), Koopa Troopa Cave (Underground), Pipeline Lagoon (Underwater), Conkdor Canyon (Desert), Ty-Foo Flurries (Snow), and Gargantuan Grotto (Forest). One of the themes also uses a background based on The Bowser Express, but it is currently not known which one.

New items such as the 10 Gold Coin and the Super Bell are also introduced. Newly introduced enemy types include Goombrat, Ant Trooper, Porcupuffer, Piranha Plants that can be placed on ceilings, Piranha Creeper (which can either be made to move constantly or be asleep), horizontally moving Thwomps, Skipsqueak, Stingby, Fire Bro, Hop-Chop, Bully, Cat Bullet Bill, Banzai Bill, Angry Sun, Charvaargh, Boom Boom, and Meowser.

There are various other new elements featured as well, such as parachutes, Bowser mobile vehicles, Tilt Lift platforms, Tornado throwing enemies, Poison, being able to include water in non-underwater levels, icicles, and more.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
