Gearbox Software – more particularly, their CEO Randy Pitchford – have been caught in one controversy or the other of late, from spats with former employees to something as minuscule as what “microtransactions” means. But amidst all of that, we haven’t forgotten that there’s still Borderlands 3 to look forward to, which continues to look great.

The Borderlands fanbase continues to look at every new detail for the game obsessively, trying to suss out whatever information they can- case in point, this user on Reddit, who seems to have analysed all the footage of the game in excruciating detail and figured out exactly what the game’s level progression curve is going to be, how it’s going to affect loot and how quickly that is earned, and how it all differs from the previous two Borderlands titles.

“From what I can tell, HP in Borderlands 3 is given by a formula of HP = 80 x 1.09^Level and dropping any decimal remainder,” they wrote. “Every data point I’ve found fits this curve. From this formula, we can extrapolate a theoretical max HP at level 72 of 39,609; this is over an order of magnitude smaller than BL2’s baseline max of 530,564. This will make loot last about forty percent longer than in 2 as stats will take log(1.09,2)=8 levels to double instead of 5.7.”

In a statement to IGN, developers Gearbox Software responded to these calculations as well, saying that though the dedication of the series’ fanbase continues to impress them, since Borderlands 3 is still in active development, level progression and scaling are not yet finalized, and might still see changes.

“The dedication and passion of our fans never ceases to amaze us!” said Gearbox. “It’s worth noting that the game is still in development so the level progression and scaling is not yet final, but we’ll have more to share and show between now and launch.”

Borderlands 3 is out on September 13 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford recently spoke about the game’s DLC, and what nature of content we can expect- read more through here.
