Nintendo dropped the biggest bombshell of them all to end their E3 2019 Direct presentation. A direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development, the company confirmed with a cryptic and mysterious teaser trailer.

What’s notable is that this is definitely a direct sequel to the 2017 Game of the Year in every way possible. The art style is the same as Breath of the Wild, and we get a look at Link and Zelda following the end of their adventure in that game. Narratively, it looks like Ganon is coming back (one particular scene that shows a shadow might actually be hinting at Ganondorf, actually), while the dark and eerie tone is definitely giving off an interesting vibe.

Nintendo didn’t give a release date (or even a release window). They didn’t even give it a proper name. They just called it “the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.” But it’s coming. We do know, thanks to previous recruitments by the studio, that Monolith Soft are assisting with development (as they did with Breath of the Wild as well). Take a look at the reveal trailer below.

Meanwhile, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is out on the Switch on September 20 this year.
