Things are changing so fast, it’s almost scary (in a thrilling sort of way). Not long ago, physical media was the end all, be all, of video games. Now, digital has taken a chunk of total game sales at a startling pace, and streaming seems to be right around the corner in doing just the same. Google’s Stadia, Sony’s PS Now, and Microsoft’s xCloud all represent that future, even if it’s still a bit hazy out in the distance. How about Nintendo? Well, they’ve looking at it, too.

In an interview with TechCrunch, Charlie Scibetta, Senior Director of corporate communications at Nintendo of America confirmed that it’s something that Nintendo is actively looking at. He did make sure to point out Nintendo is still focused on retail and digital sales as of now, but streaming is still definitely something that will be on the horizon for the future.

“Streaming is certainly interesting technology, Nintendo is keeping a close eye on it and we’re evaluating it,” he said. “We don’t have anything to announce right now in terms of adopting that technology. For us, it’s still physical and it’s digital downloads through our eShop.”

Nintendo, in general, has been slower to adapt to technical changes. Some would even say they’re still quite far behind in a lot of areas, such as online functionality. But it goes to show how important many think streaming is going to be for the future of the industry when everyone is at least thinking about it.
