FromSoftware Producer Says Current VR Is Too “Limiting”; No VR Plans For The Near Future

The developers of Dark Souls and Elden Ring aren't looking into more VR projects for now.

Virtual Reality is going to be a part of the future, of that there’s no doubt. Whether or not it will play a bigger part in mainstream games, or be more of a thing standing on its own remains to be seen, but it’s a technology that’s quickly, and surely, evolving. One developer that won’t be there for it in the near future, however, is FromSoftware. Despite dabbling in VR, they don’t seem to be eager to jump back in anytime soon.

Speaking with Destructoid, Producer Masanori Takeuchi talked about the company’s game for PSVR, Déraciné, and how the team was surprised by how limited it ended up being, saying they have no plans for VR titles in the near future because of that.

“It’s because when we did Déraciné, the hardware was actually a little more limiting than we expected,” Takeuchi explained. “We couldn’t quite render and depict the things we wanted to using PSVR – just the hardware and the know-how we had at the time.”

However, he didn’t completely shut down potential VR projects. While there’s nothing in the near future, he did mention that when the next generation consoles are out, it’s something they’ll revisit to see how much it’s evolved.

“So perhaps we’ll wait a little bit and see what happens with the PS5 or the next-gen hardware, and then see what sort of performance we can get from that, what we can render on that hardware, and then make a decision,” he said.

Déraciné was a fun, if underwhelming, little title, but it doesn’t seem like anything like that is in the company’s near future. Maybe we’ll get a more fleshed out version for PSVR2, whenever that comes out. But From still remains prolific, with their latest dark fantasy title, Elden Ring, set to come out next year.
