Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Director On Game’s Length: “It’s Bigger Than I Thought”

It's definitely going to be a meaty experience, as per Stig Asmussen.

How long a game is going to end up being is a question we ask about every upcoming title, but when that game is a purely single player experience, as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order surprisingly is, that question becomes even more pertinent. The game’s developers have spoken in the past about this, mentioning that it’s going to be a “meaty” experience, and recently, game director Stig Asmussen went into that a little bit more, while speaking in an interview with Game Informer (which you can view below).

Though Asmussen wouldn’t give an exact number for how long an average playthrough will be, he did give assurances that it’s not at all going to be a short game, while also saying that after internal playtesting, it had turned out to be longer than he had expected.

“We are doing playtesting,” said Asmussen. “[There’s] actually a new round of playtesting next week with the most completed form of the game, and I will say that I thought it was big, but it’s bigger than I thought.”

That said, Asmussen went on to clarify that it’s not going to be a “massive, massive game”, even though there’s going to be plenty of content in there, and a lot of stuff for players to see and do.

“With that being said, I don’t want people to think that this is a massive, massive game,” he said. “But there’s a lot there. I think it’s going to take people longer than they expect. But with that being said, it’s really hard to gauge right now. Part of that might be because the length that we have right now is because we haven’t done our job through the playtesting process completely yet, and people might be getting stuck in areas where we don’t intend them to get stuck, or pathing doesn’t read as clearly as it should, or there’s difficult curves or spikes that we don’t intend.”

“I really can’t give a time limit on that,” he continued. “And I don’t think we will be, until much closer to launch. But it’s not a short game. I hear people saying things like, ‘oh hey, Respawn, 5 hours Call of Duty campaigns’ and all that kind of stuff, and it’s like- that’s not the type of game this is. We don’t have any multiplayer, it’s really just all about the single player. So to deliver a quality experience, you have to be able to visit a certain amount of locations, and experience a certain amount of play time that’s satisfying. And I think we’re definitely in that zone.”

Seeing as this is a game that claims to be a proper metroidvania experience, one would imagine that a decent length would be sort of a given (though it’s certainly not guaranteed). Given how many assurances Respawn have given about this, there’s certainly cause to be optimistic.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is out on November 15 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Check out over 25 minutes of new gameplay footage from the action adventure title through here.
