CDPR is trying something new with Cyberpunk 2077's cutscenes.

There’s been plenty of talk surrounding Cyberpunk 2077’s commitment to its first person perspective, and what effect that will have on the game’s storytelling. The RPG will rarely ever feature third person cutscenes, but CD Projekt RED have remained adamant that it’s the right choice for the game that they’re making.

A lot of that, it seems, is down to the game’s interactive and “fully immersive” cutscenes, which, rather than showing players pre-recorded scenes, puts them in the middle of these scenes and lets them move around and interact with them based on the context of the situation. CD Projekt RED are calling it a new “Scene System”, and recently, while speaking with GameSpot, John Mamais, head of CD Projekt RED’s Krakow office, talked in detail about what exactly it is.

“For Cyberpunk, for the narrative part, for the cinematic part, there is something new called a Scene System,” he said. “It’s like our dialogue and cinematic system that occurs within the context of the gameplay of the game. It’s really important because one of the pillars of the development of the project is the idea of full immersion and this new Scene System is all about full immersion. You don’t break into a letterbox formula and see this cutscene taking place, you’re actually in the cutscene and you can control the character or the camera, there are different levels of control depending on the cutscene. It’s fully immersive; it doesn’t take you out of the experience at all. So we’re doing that and also other things too.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is out on April 16, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia- but it probably won’t ever come out on the Switch. If you’re worried about a delay, don’t be- CDPR is looking to make sure it hits the game’s intended release date.
