Though Sony’s backward compatibility efforts (or their lack thereof) drew plenty of criticism this generation – even as Microsoft made strides in the area – they are, with the upcoming PS5, looking to right those wrongs. It’s been confirmed that the system will indeed feature backward compatibility, and while full details are not yet known, Sony recently said that they were still working on making sure that it happens.

It’s something that will hold a lot of value for consumers. If you’re someone who has a PS4, there’s solace in knowing that your game purchases won’t be rendered useless when the new console arrives, while those adopting the PS5 without having owned a PS4 will immediately get access to the current console’s massive library.

And according to Kazuhiro Echigoya of Koei Tecmo, producer on the upcoming Romance of the Three Kingdoms 14, though backward compatibility isn’t something that will particularly affect past titles, it is something that will help boost adoption for the PS5.

“I don’t think it will have much of an impact in growing or expanding our past titles,” Echigoya told us in an interview. “I think the biggest point for players is being able to carry over the content, or assets, that they currently own. Since there is low risk when shifting to this new hardware, I imagine that the PS5 will be adopted quickly.”

According to recent reports, Sony plans on doing a full unveiling of the PS5 in February of 2020, so it’s likely that we’ll receive the full details on how its backward compatibility functions quite soon.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 14 is due out for the PS4 and PC on February 28, 2020. Our full interview with Koei Tecmo will be going live soon, so stay tuned.
