Nintendo Plans To Continue Expanding IPs Beyond Games And Work With Other Companies

The video game giant wants a bigger piece of other pies.

There was a time when video game giant Nintendo was very much an island unto itself. While there’s still a lot of that in the company (look at what they do versus what Sony and Microsoft does in the gaming space, for instance), times have changed, as the company has become far more open to using their IPs in new ways- and it seems that is only going to continue.

In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Shigeru Miyamoto reaffirms the firm’s commitment to furthering their brand with new collaborations, and working with more companies they haven’t done business with in the past (thanks to Nintendo Everything for translations and transcribing).

“We want to expand our video game characters to a variety of settings – not just in games, all while keeping their value. In other words, we’ll be collaborating with various other companies.” Miyamoto said. “If we’re able to accomplish that, we can create more opportunities for people to make contact with our characters on a much larger scale than usual.”

One of the biggest things the company has done in that regard of late is the live action film, Detective Pikachu, based on their Pokemon IP. A new theme park is also coming soon based on their portfolio of titles. Meanwhile, a Super Mario animation film is also in the works with Illumination. So what Miyamoto says is largely true, and Nintendo is expanding like never before.
