The Assassin’s Creed franchise is coming back, and it’s taking us the way of the Vikings with Valhalla. The game will be the first full title since Odyssey, and will also be the first to come to next generation consoles. It also features something a little new, specifically that you will now have a centralized base of operations, a settlement, that you will need to take care of. While we don’t know the specifics just yet of how it will function in the greater scheme of the game, it does seem you may have to be unpopular from time to time.

In the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine (issue 176), Narrative Director Darby McDevitt spoke in depth about the upcoming adventure title. When talking about the settlement system, he said it will function as a sort of hub. There you’ll be able to do things like forge weapons, make friends, as well as enemies. He said the settlement will be home to some storylines, which will evolve, and that you may find yourself having to make some unpopular decisions.

“We have a few, overlapping parallel storylines in this game much like any film would have an A and B plot. One of the continuous stories is the evolution of the your settlement and the people within it. And as it grows, it experiences growing pains, and as one of the leaders you have to deal with that. And you have to make some tough decisions.”

The Creative Director mentioned that the game’s side content would feature some deeper storytelling than we’re used to, so it seems this will be part of that. While there’s been hideouts and reoccurring locations in previous games, this is really the first time there has been an ongoing, evolving hub area, so it’ll be interesting to see how they balance that with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla launches this holiday season.
