PS5’s 3D audio engine, called Tempest, is perhaps one of the console’s most unique hardware advancements, and while its super-fast SSD has been grabbing most of the headlines these last couple of months, there’s no doubt that developers in the industry are more than a little excited about the potential of Tempest, and how it might help take audio in games to the next level.

Another such developer is Marcin Makaj of the indie studio The Moonwalls, developer of the upcoming adventure title Commander ’85. Speaking in a recent interview with GamingBolt, Makaj talked about the Tempest Engine, saying that its capability to “achieve realistic 3D audio without additional hardware is an amazing opportunity” and opinion that realistic audio in games is one of the most important elements of any experience.

I always considered audio as one of the most important elements of a video game, and I am all into new audio technologies, especially as advanced as Tempest,” Makaj told GamingBolt. “Being able to achieve realistic 3D audio without additional hardware is an amazing opportunity, and I really want to explore it in my next games.”

While visuals have grown from strength to strength in the industry over the years, audio has often been overlooked. To their credit, Sony have been talking up the PS5’s 3D audio engine quite a bit, and are promising much more immersive experiences as a result, so there’s potentially quite a bit to look forward to as far as realistic and immersive audio in games is concerned.

The Moonwalls’ Commander ’85 is due out for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. You can read our full interview with Makaj through here.
