The Game Awards 2020 Will Not Be Postponed And Are Still On For This Year

Host and Creator Geoff Keighley promises it'll also be one of the biggest yet.

The Game Awards

There are many big nights and events for the gaming industry, but over the last few years the biggest one to emerge is The Game Awards. The online show was created and hosted by Geoff Keighley and has become both the gaming world’s Oscars, as well as a massive show to advertise and reveal major games. Like all other major events in the industry, it too will also be impacted by COVID.

Speaking with IGN, Keighley confirmed that the event will go on as scheduled this year. But due to COVID, it will be a digital event. He didn’t offer any details about what to expect, but said people should watch the upcoming Gamescom Opening Night Live that he will host. He said that will be something of a preview for what he has in mind for TGA 2020.

“Yeah… what I will say about it is, we have a very interesting plan for the show this year. We’re definitely doing it. A lot of people are [asking], ‘Are you delaying it? The Oscars are being postponed, are you postponing The Game Awards?’ We are absolutely not. We’ll share more in the coming weeks about it, but it’s actually probably going to be our biggest show yet.

“We are obviously not going to have 10,000 people in a room together, physically, for the show, but I think… you’ll see a little bit of this with how we do GamesCom. We’re definitely doing more than just me in a room, announcing winners. I’m really passionate about [still] doing the show live, versus something pre-recorded. So, yeah, we’re working on some scenarios for ways we can present the show live with a bit of spectacle to people… without the public [being] able to buy tickets to come to the show, and things like that, this year.”

The Game Awards have traditionally been in December, and this year will most likely be no different. Gamescom Opening Night Live will be on August 27th, so we can maybe catch something of a glimpse perhaps of what it will look like then. We’ll be sure to let you know when a date for the event is announced.
