Stock issues with the new consoles will allow Nintendo to stay on top, thinks Mat Piscatella.

We’re now less than a month way from the release of new generation consoles from both Sony and Microsoft in the form of the PS5 and Xbox Series console family, respectively. It’s an exciting time, no doubt, but the third platform holder in the game, Nintendo, is still very much here. Despite being more than 3 years old now, their Switch platform continues to dominate the charts, and some predict it’ll stay that way up until the end of the year.

NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella published his predictions about what holiday sales will look like, and says that despite the launch of new systems, he foresees the Switch being the best-selling system. Now, before you get the pitchforks out, his reasoning is sound. Piscatella says that the main reason Nintendo will be able to pull off this feat is due to the stock issues that will probably plague both the PS5 and Xbox Series systems. He still expects them all to do very well for the holidays.

“PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series console sales will sizzle – I’ll start with the most obvious prediction. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles should be among the hottest holiday gifting items of 2020. Units will be tough to find with continued strong demand into 2021.

“Nintendo Switch will be the best-selling console of holiday 2020 – Switch will also be a hot holiday gifting item with more households picking up multiple Switch consoles in the fourth quarter. The lack of available inventory of new PlayStations and Xbox systems will leave Switch as an appealing available option (although supply may still be difficult to find).”

It’s been rumored that Nintendo has another system coming at the beginning of next year, a revised and more powerful version of their Switch, but for this Christmas it’ll be the standard and Lite versions currently available. Nintendo will also have Pikmin 3 Deluxe at the end of this month as well as Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity in November to help drive those potential sales.
