Battlefield 2042 hasn’t had the best of critical and commercial reception, and this continues to be a point of worry for EA- and it’s been claimed that in order to curtail some of those deficiencies, the publisher is considering offering up some of the game as a free-to-play offering. Following up on this reports, industry insider Tom Henderson has clarified how exactly the free-to-play process might work out.

Speaking through Twitter, Henderson has said that it’s most likely that “some of” Battlefield 2042‘s Portal mode might be offered to players for free. The mode allows players to create custom games using past Battlefield games’ maps and other elements. Previously, EA CEO Andrew Wilson had also teased that the game will have certain “free-to-enter” components in the near future.

According to Henderson, this isn’t an announcement he expects to be coming in the upcoming weeks, since the team still has a lot to do before the Portal mode can be made appealing so that free-to-play users can be potentially turned into paying users. Of course, it needs to be clarified that these are rumours at this point, and as such, should be taken with a grain of salt.
