Sega is Considering Raising its Game Prices to $70

“We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with price increases, while also keeping an eye on market conditions," the publisher says.

The beginning of the new console generation in late 2020 also brought with it an increase in price for games, with a number of major publishers deciding to sell their big flagship releases at $70 instead of the standard $60. An increasing number of companies have adopted that new pricing strategy over the last couple of years, with Microsoft and Nintendo being the most recent pair with Redfall and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom respectively, and it seems Sega might soon follow suit as well.

In a Q&A session following the company’s recent fiscal briefing, when asked about potential plans to release game prices going forward, the publisher suggested that it might consider that for titles that are “commensurate with price increases”.

“In the global marketplace, AAA game titles for console have been sold at $59.99 for many years, but titles sold at $69.99 have appeared in the last year,” Sega said. “We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with price increases, while also keeping an eye on market conditions.”

Publishers raising the prices of their games has generally been met with widespread backlash, though at this point, those who’re still selling their flagship titles for $60 – especially on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S – are few and far between. Even though Sega hasn’t yet explicitly confirmed that it will be going down that route, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Japanese publisher did eventually take that decision.
