The Assassin’s Creed franchise’s historical settings have always been the franchise’s backbones, but it hasn’t quite enjoyed the same sort of success with its modern-day story, which has often been criticized by players for being too convolution, or simply not engaging enough. However, with the next game in the series, Ubisoft might be looking to shake things up on that front in intriguing fashion.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is confirmed to be set in feudal Japan, but what can we expect from its modern-day setting, especially with 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla having wrapped up the arc focused on Layla Hassan, which started with 2017’s Origins? Well, according to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, the next game in the franchise is headed into the future.

As per Henderson, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red’s modern-day sections will be set in the last decade of the 21st century, between the years 2090 and 2099,  and will feature an entirely new cast of Abstergo Industries characters.

Interestingly, YouTuber Sliderv2 was recently also able to find an unused post-credits scene in the recently-released Assassin’s Creed Mirage, in which two characters in conversation with each other refer to an event called “the Great Shift”, and also refer to the 21st century as “ancient history”.

Interestingly, the unused scene seems to be tied to Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, the next mainline game after Codename Red, suggesting the series might jump even further forward in time after the latter releases, and that the aforementioned “Great Shift” could be something that’s seen in Codename Red’s modern-day story. You can view the unused cutscene below.

Leaks have claimed that Assassin’s Creed Codename Red will launch sometime in 2024, something that a Ubisoft employee also recently alluded to on LinkedIn. The game will allegedly feature two playable protagonists – a samurai and a shinobi – with official details supposedly coming in early 2024.
