Has anyone realized that the last Zelda game with a normal button based control scheme was Wind Waker? After that, all Zelda games have been either touch based or motion control based. Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword on the Wii were motion control based games, whereas Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks on the DS were touch based. Sure, Twilight Princess was also on the GCN and featured normal controls, but the main version- the Wii version- supported motion controls.
However, with Skyward Sword, Nintendo went all out and made it into an almost fully motion based game. The Wii Motion Plus made the experience tons better than anyone could have imagined. And I honestly cannot imagine playing Zelda games any other way. Series producer Eiji Aonuma feels this way too.
Speaking in an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, he said: “I honestly think we cannot go back to button controls now. So, I think that these controls will be used in future Zelda titles, too.”
With the Wii U’s tablet controller, though, it’ll be hard to replicate the exact control schemes that the Wii Remote could handle. But of course, the Wii U’s remote offers a lot more possibilities, so we can expect Nintendo to go berserk and give us some completely crazy controls.
