Thousands of jobs have been cut across the entire games industry in a wave of mass layoffs in 2024 so far, and that number is continuing to steadily grow. Ubisoft is the latest company to have eliminated positions, having cut 45 jobs in a fresh round of layoffs, as reported by GameSpot.

Having laid off over 120 people last November, the company recently confirmed that it’s cutting 45 jobs in its Global Publishing and Asia-Pacific divisions in order to “streamline operations” and “enhance collective efficiency.”

“Over the past few months, every team within Ubisoft has been exploring ways to streamline our operations and enhance our collective efficiency so that we are better positioned for success in the long term,” Ubisoft said in a statement. “In this context, today we announced that we are further reorganizing our Global Publishing central and APAC structures to adapt them to the market evolution with a more efficient and agile approach. Those changes will impact 45 positions overall. These are not decisions taken lightly and we are providing comprehensive support for our impacted colleagues. We also want to share our utmost gratitude and respect for their many contributions to the company.”

A number of companies in the games industry have been hit with layoffs this year so far. Microsoft cut 1,900 jobs in January, which was followed by layoffs at PlayStation (900 people), Electronic Arts (670 people), Sega (240 people), and more. Earlier this year, Riot Games laid off roughly 530 people, while since June last year, Embracer Group has cut about 1,400 roles since last June.

Other companies that have suffered layoffs this year include Gearbox Entertainment, Certain Affinity, Deck Nine, Behaviour Interactive, People Can Fly, and Thunderful Group, among others.
