According to a recent study, more than 1 in 6 gamers do not buy DLC, and just under half do not even know what they are. While we can’t verify this study for it’s validity, we can assume that Nintendo have hold of similar numbers. This, when added to the fact that Nintendo has been much less outspoken in it’s online aspect, means that Nintendo is finally making its move.
The Big N has already started a TV ad campaign where they hope to promote and simplify the process of going online and purchasing various items of WiiWare or DSiWare. The campaign will be live for three weeks.
But don’t worry; Nintendo aren’t ditching retail copies for digital distribution. They will also be providing their employees with help sheets, should you need assistance.
Nintendo had this to say:
WiiWare and DSiWare are not threats to retail. We don’t believe today’s packaged business will simply be replaced by electronic distribution.
Titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart and Wii Fit will always work best with the big launch presence that only a retail environment can provide. WiiWare will work alongside retail. It is not a replacement.
