The wait for The Alters: Last Variable is finally over, and if you’ve been keeping up, you’ve probably already learned that it’s quite a good time.
Scientist Jan has a ticking clock and a rather maddening puzzle to solve in the standalone expansion, and the Oasis serves as the ultimate goal. As a result, he creates a specialized crew of charismatic new Alters to the table, and harnesses a cryo-sleep mechanic that throws a wrench in the long-term decision-making. However, it seems that the planet itself may be impeding their goals in bizarre ways. Can they make it in time?
It all fits well within the base game’s formula, and it comes together pretty well to make this expansion look quite worthwhile, and quite a tempting proposition if you happened to have missed out last year.
With around 20 hours of new content to get through, Last Variable’s definitely an expansion that could keep you busy, and can even bring enough replay value if you choose to push its systems to the limit. The launch trailer is below if you want to check it out before you dive in, or perhaps return to your playthrough after a short break.
