We’ve always been quick to praise STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, a game that had to face a lot of troubles before it hit the shelves, and then face even more of them when its release build wasn’t as good as its players were expecting. It’s a testament to the franchise’s allure that those very players stuck around, and with updates and fixes to The Zone and the many systems governing it, it’s now among the finest open worlds we know of.
Of course, that hasn’t stopped the makers from working on bringing more to the table, and we’re now just a couple of weeks away from Cost of Hope, a new expansion that’s being pitched as the second chapter of the story started in the base game, and as a source of hours of new content, and new memories made possible by a gameplay loop that’s quite hard to imitate thanks to how unpredictable it can get.
If you’re thinking about diving in, we’ve put together a few things you might want to think about before you pick up a copy. Let’s dive right in!
1. The Expansion’s Sheer Scale
Cost of Hope is touted to bring “dozens of hours” of playtime to the game, and it is going to take a whole lot more to get through for those among you who simply cannot leave any stone unturned when you dive into a world such as the one it offers. The Zone’s new additions are sure to have you finding new ways to make use of the A-Life system, and witnessing the chaos your actions allow to unfold.
With new areas, new characters, and a whole new story to take on, we’re not really surprised that Cost of Hope is a big expansion. Indeed, we’d have probably raised an eyebrow if it was the other way around.
2. It Runs Parallel To The Main Story
You’re still in control of Skif, and if you’re in the middle of a playthrough, continue as you were until you receive a signal on your PDA that triggers the expansion’s beginning. Cost of Hope isn’t going to function as a post-game chapter, but is going to take place alongside the main campaign.
Details are a little scarce about how the story it’s bringing can integrate with the rest of the narrative, but we’re quite optimistic about it all working out for the best thanks to how the expansion’s new additions are likely to fit right in with the rest of the game’s cast of eccentric individuals who seek to use The Zone to serve one goal or another. Expect more ideological quandaries and tough decisions as you try to navigate a fragile peace between two familiar factions.
3. Duty and Freedom
If you’ve been with the franchise for a while, you know that Duty and Freedom are factions with distinctly different views on what The Zone’s presence means for the future of humanity. Well, they’re coming to the game now and are on the verge of breaking a fragile peace that has kept them out of conflict for a while. However, things in The Zone are always on the verge of conflict or actively in it, and we’re sure the A-Life system is going to have many ways to make them break their treaty with Skif in the middle of it all.
Of course, we’re most curious to see how each faction blends in with its ideological equivalent in the new game, and how their presence is woven into the world’s existing framework.
4. Your Journey, Your Choices

As always, you’re going to have to make decisions about whom to support in a variety of situations, with consequences that make those choices come with inevitable pros and cons. That’s already a familiar part of the experience in STALKER 2, and there’s no reason for Cost of Hope to try fixing what isn’t broken in the slightest.
Your decisions don’t just influence the ending of the journey you’re on, but also shape what you see along the way. That’s an immediate reason to dive back into a new playthrough, but it’s also a very immersive way of letting a story unfold around you.
5. Iron Forest Is Opening Its Metaphorical Doors
It’s been stubbornly inaccessible for a long time now, but we’re finally going to go to the Iron Forest, which is presumably where either Duty or Freedom has set up their base. Gameplay showcases have given us glimpses of an almost maze-like environment where we suspect finding our way is going to take up a lot of the expansion’s significant playtime in its opening hours.
Of course, it’s filled with anomalies and comes with a very industrial vibe to it all that makes it an intriguing part of the upcoming expansion when you compare it with the relatively open plains and fields that the base game’s regions bring to the table.
6. The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant

Definitely among the expansion’s headliners is the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the surrounding area, which is now a part of Cost of Hope’s new additions. It’s every bit as desolate and grim as you’d expect, and recent showcases have shown off some enemies with serious agility and strength for Skif to take on. We’re wondering where those new threats come from, and what’s made them so hard to kill.
This place is arguably the beating heart of the franchise’s narrative, a historical ground zero for The Zone and all the stories that have unfolded within its confines. It’s great that we’re getting to take Skif to the heart of The Zone, and perhaps learn more about factions new and old in the process.
7. Much, Much Bigger Than DLC Locations
Both the Iron Forest and Chornobyl are being pitched as regions that are bigger on their own than any other DLC region in the franchise’s past, with each one being its own territory with a central hub and dozens of smaller locations that have their own questlines and activities. We’re suspecting that each one is going to give us a lot of playtime all on its own, but it’s in how they manage to overlap that Cost of Hope could be memorable.
Will Duty and Freedom be fighting for control of both regions at once, their conflict spilling out into the larger world from the base game? How is Skif going to navigate their delicate truce, if it even exists at all by the time the expansion’s story begins? We’ve got a lot of questions, and the answers are now tantalizingly close at hand.
8. New Anomalies, Artefacts, and Arch-Anomalies

It wouldn’t be a STALKER expansion without a bunch of new Anomalies and new artifacts being brought into the mix now, would it? They’re definitely there, just waiting for you to discover and engage with them in what’s undoubtedly a crucial pillar of the expansion’s creepy vibe that acts as a common factor between both its new regions.
We’re sure that there are dangers that go beyond the scope of the main conflict between Duty and Freedom, or perhaps ones that could help you learn more about the enigmatic leaders of the respective factions, each of whom seems to have ulterior motives guiding their actions. Either way, all of it is just waiting for Skif, and you by extension, to uncover it all as diligently as you can.
9. New Gear and Weapons For New Threats
Those new Anomalies and those mutant-like soldiers at Chornobyl are definitely credible threats to any Stalker, and Skif is no different. But of course, the new expansion brings new weapons to the table, and we’re sure they’re going to be great if they make use of the DualSense’s haptics in the way that those in the base game do. There’s also new gear to find, and new ways to make yourself a killing machine that even the most durable enemies fall to despite putting up a good fight.
More ways to make your Stalker the best one there is means more fun discovering them all through painstaking exploration. Sign us up!
10. A Single Playthrough Isn’t Going To Cut It

We said it before, but it’s worth mentioning again. You can’t see everything Cost of Hope has to offer in a single playthrough, and considering just how large the new regions are, it’s likely that you’re going to have a lot of replay value out of this one. The nonlinear structure and A-Life system lend themselves to an organically unfolding path to the next story objective that’s designed to lock you out of some outcomes once you don’t choose them.
Indeed, we’d argue that the second time around is a lot more fun as you make choices after getting a solid peek behind the curtain, an approach that lends itself well to some very entertaining experimentation.
Well, that’s about it for this one. This is an expansion that’s quite easy to recommend to veterans of the base game, but we’d also say it’s as good a reason as any to dive into this one anew if you haven’t had the pleasure of doing so before. It’s out on August 20, 2026, on all major platforms if you’re interested.
