2009 and 2010 is when all the 3D buzz started, with movie releases like Avatar, and new 3D TV’s by companies like Sony, which also announced that the Playstation 3 will support 3D with games like Gran Turismo 5.
But now the co-founder of Ninja Theory Tameem Antoniades states that in this generation of consoles, 3D will be limited, and here is why:
“The problem is that to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye. And at least a 720p resolution [per eye], so in essence that’s 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second, and the current generation can only process very rudimentary graphics at that spec.” He said
“I think the technology’s limited now, so you won’t be able to play stuff that looks like Avatar – the movie – in 3D, every generation has to be at least five-to-ten times more powerful than the last, so I think we’ll get there in the next generation. I think that will be totally revolutionary for games.” he added
So what are your thoughts? me personally, i pretty much agree with him, i don’t expect big things from 3D this year or the next, but i guess only time will tell.
